Joanna Lowes

Horse trainer, behaviourist and rider

From a horse-mad kid to several attempts to get a non-horsey job, including a stint in the army as well as various jobs abroad, I've ended up right where I should be; training horses full time on my own little yard in Wales. I spent over five years developing my understanding of horse behaviour and training alongside the legendary Monty Roberts.  As his international assistant and tour rider I travelled with him to countries such as Brazil, South Africa, Hungary, as well as regular tours around the UK and Germany, assisting with a wide variety of events and private clients. From wild mustangs to Her Majesty's valuable young racehorses, I have been lucky to have an intensely varied experience in a range of disciples.

"A good horse trainer can make a horse do almost anything. A great trainer can cause the horse to want to do it"

Thanks in great part to Monty, the world of horse training has changed dramatically over the past couple of decades. That is not to say we have all the answers yet, nor have we changed enough. It is however obvious that traditional methods using pain or force do not yield the same results as a horse trained through trust, with incremental steps and utilising a varied toolbox.

I'm one of only two certified instructors in Wales; after having spent so much time travelling with Monty I was encouraged to 'challenge' the advanced exams, which I did, and passed with flying colours to become one of about 80 individuals worldwide currently holding the qualification. I obtained my BHSAI some 10 years ago, and I'm also a Horse Sense and Healing Coach and a specialised Lead-Up Instructor.

My time nowadays is largely devoted to the hands-on training of horses, mostly starters but also solving behavioural issues. I offer training livery at my yard in Carmarthenshire, as well as call outs and lessons.

The cornerstone of Monty's concepts, a horse who chooses to be with you and finds a reward for making the right decision will naturally become more willing and cooperative. Violence and force are absolutely unnecessary in the training  or handling of horses. It's the start of a conversation, communication stripped right down to body language, incredibly beneficial to both horses and humans.

Starting

I have been involved in the starting of a vast array of horses, from native ponies to highly strung warmbloods, mustangs and young racehorses. A logical and progressive process is followed recognising the needs and abilities of the horse. With a steady stream of horses receiving their first riders and initial training at Coetir Bach is has become the majority of my work.

I'm commonly called on to help solve behavioural issues. Napping, bolting, reluctance to perform, foot handling problems, pulling pushing or not standing still... isn't it wonderful what these animals can learn! I genuinely enjoy breaking problems down and rebuilding new behaviours, with a happy horse at the result.

Non-Loading

Mounting Issues

Non-Loading

A very common problem for many horse owners, it can usually be solved with the correct equipment, groundwork and timely cues and rewards. No whips, feed or ropes needed (except the one attached to the horse, and then not always!)

Groundwork

Mounting Issues

Non-Loading

Good groundwork is essential for a horse who is a joy to handle. Never pulling or barging, standing still when required as well as backing up and moving sideways, these skills will spill over into all aspects of dealing with your horse.

Mounting Issues

Quite a speciality for me now! The horse who begins to move off before a rider is seated could be a considerable danger, especially if it leads to bolting. A horse should stand like a statue as standard, moving sideways to present you with the stirrup is a bonus!

Ridden Schooling

Competition Rider

From just backed to a high standard of flatwork as well as lots of experience in schooling for showjumping, I'm a capable rider in various disciplines and have a great success rate in resolving ridden problems.

When my own competition schedule permits, I'm happy to compete client's horses. With a high success rate (and often beating her own horses!) I can introduce your horse to a competition environment and/or compete at levels the owner isn't yet ready for.
